Join us for a Basic Beginner Samba class on YouTube

On Sunday 14th March 2021 we held another free live-stream class on YouTube, this time a Beginner Basic Samba dance class.

In this class we started with the Samba Reverse Basic. This is a step forward with the left foot, a bounce on the spot, and then a step back with the right foot (repeating the bounce).

Some time is then spent discussing the Samba pelvic action, using a mild thrusting action by ‘pulling in’ your belly button.

Next we introduce the Samba Whisk. This is a side step with a bounced cross behind.

The Stationary Samba Walk followed which involves a close with one foot, a point back with the other, and a slip back of the front foot. When you then do the subsequent close on the next foot it is closed slightly forward (where you had originally started) to keep the overall movement on the spot.

Bota Fogos are introduced next, moving forward and backward before we start looking at the Voltas. Initially we do our Voltas in straight lines, at both half and then full speed, before looking at the Solo Spot Volta that rotates around on the spot.

Finally, just when we need a little breather, there’s a basic Rhythm Bounce.

Not long before lockdown one of our students had looked at the Can’t Stop Loving You line dance in a private lesson.

They sent us a few Line Dance scripts during lockdown, and asked if we might be able to teach a few of them. We thought this would be the best one to start with.

The Can’t Stop Loving You Line Dance

Line dance refers to a style of dancing where everyone dances on their own, facing the same direction as everyone else.

The Can’t Stop Loving You line dance routine is a four wall routine. This means that each time we finish the complete routine, you will have turned to face the next wall on the right. By the time you have gone through the routine four times then, you will be back to where you started.

The routine is taught in easy to follow stages that build you up to the full choreographed routine. There’s plenty of opportunities to practice the routine throughout the video.

The Music

The recommended song for this line dance is Shout It To The World by Lionel Richie.

However for music licensing reasons we have used I Won’t Waste This by Wildflowers feat. Russell Vista, plus we quite like it!

Looking to learn the Bossa Nova 66, but don’t have the space, or want to practice at home? Check out our sequence for small spaces series of videos.

Sequence dancing is where you repeat the same 16 or 32 bar routine throughout a song, dancing around the room, and in sync with everyone else.

Now that’s great when you have the space! What we’re going to show you today is how to practice the basic movements in your front room.

The Dance – Bossa Nova 66

Bossa Nova is another Brazilian dance with similarities to the Samba. The Bossa Nova 66 sequence dance also features a few Samba steps which should be familiar too.

The routine comprises a left foot box/reverse basic; opening up away from your partner, and back in again around on the spot; whisks, promenade and counter promenade bota fogos and finally an underarm spin for the follower.

To convert this into the full routine you would only need to do the open outs down the room, rather than around on the spot.

The Music

We’ve used two tracks for this Bossa Nova 66 lesson. The first is How About That! by the Chalalatas

and then our faster piece (a Samba) is Summer Lilac by Bonsaye
