Thames Valley Firm Haines Watts, Chartered Accountants, launched its search earlier in the year for their 2014 Young Entrepreneur of the Year.

The competition looks for people under the age of 35 with outstanding business talent throughout the Thames Valley, that have been running for at least a year, and can demonstrate sound financial results.

There are five regions who each select a regional winner, with those winners going forward to the Grand Final to be announced the Haines Watts Thames Valley Young Entrpreneur of the Year.

Antony heard about the competition on Twitter and applied right away, and then never thought anything of it afterwards.

Fast forward a few months and Antony, Emma and little Imogen are driving back from our Bournemouth Dance Break when Antony gets a call to be told he’d been shortlisted to the top three for the region.

A meeting at the Slough office was arranged for last Monday and Antony was required to do a 15 minute presentation to one of the Partners.  It was nerve-wracking, especially as Antony had only received the details of what was expected a couple of days before, but Antony was more than happy to talk about himself for 15 minutes straight 😉

Then began the agonising wait to find out if Antony was to become the Slough regional winner…ok the title of this post may have given away the ending but…yes!  Antony got the call on Friday to say that he was the regional winner for Slough and would be going forward to the Grand Final on Wednesday 5th November in Reading.

Antony will be up against the regional winners from the other Haines Watts offices and all of them will be presenting to a panel made up of partners from each of the offices as well as selected external entrepreneurs.

In addition to any related publicity, each winning business will receive a cash prize of £250 plus a year-long mentoring and support programme from a Partner at Haines Watts.

The winners from the local competitions will go forward to a regional final and a single winner will be announced, receiving a further £500 cash prize.

There will also be a notable business speaker on the day, who will share ideas and experiences with the finalists.

We, and we’re sure all our students too, wish Antony the best of luck.

Learn To Dance 2013 SquareSo the line-up of couples was announced on Sunday night, and with a new baby in the house we’ve only just had a chance to catch up with our recording (thanks TiVo).

In terms of the much discussed presenting pairing of Tess and Claudia, we’re all for it.  They seem to work really well together and Claudia brings a great sense of humour and wit to the show.

In case you missed it the announced couples are as follows:

Strictly 2014 Couples

Our Strictly 2014 line-up of couples

  1. Alison Hammond with Aljaz, Jake Wood with Janette, Caroline Flack with Pasha, Steve Backshall with Ola, Pixie Lott with Trent
  2. Judy Murray with Anton, Gregg Wallace with Aliona, Frankie Bridge with Kevin, Scott Mills with Joanne, Tim Wonnacott with Natalie
  3. Sunetra Sarker with Brendan, Mark Wright with Karen,Simon Webbe with Kristina, Thom Evans with Iveta,Jennifer Gibney with Tristan.

Straight after the show the BBC interviewed each of the couples for their initial reactions to the pairings, though as always we’d love to hear how some of the pro’s actually feel!

Having watched the show, and the all important first group dance, we’re definitely looking forward to seeing more from Alison Hammond, Pixie Lott (already touted by the Daily Star as a ringer), Frankie Bridge, Simon Webbe (Christmas Special participant 2011) and Thom Evans.

It will be interesting to see how Scott Mills performs as him and Jo have an obvious connection that could prove fruitful when it comes to performances, but he seems quite shy which could be a stumbling block.

Anton will have his work cut out in the initial weeks with Judy, but as a former sportswoman her competitive streak should see her put the requisite hours in.

There’s always room for a few surprises and we look forward to seeing some of the early training footage if the BBC release it like they did last year – keep checking back as we’ll update you if they do.

Who are you looking forward to seeing this year, and who should be sent to one of our LearnToDance classes to brush up before the show starts?

Learn To Dance LogoIt is with great regret that we have decided to move our Thursday night classes from our Eton venue.  Eton was the first hall we launched LearnToDance in, and has been a regular class for over 8 years now, however parking over the years has increasingly been a limiting factor and we have come to the decision to move to a venue that comes with plenty of its own parking.

From Thursday 10th July our new venue will be Desborough College, Shoppenhangers Road, Maidenhead, SL6 2QB.

We will continue to have a beginner class at 8pm and Improver class at 9pm, but we will also be introducing another FitSteps class at 7pm for those that might prefer a slightly earlier class than our existing Tuesday night Eton Wick class at 8.30pm.

We hope our existing Thursday night students will follow us to our new venue, but if it is a bit further out for you don’t forget we still have our Sunday night classes in Eton Wick or Mondays in Burnham.

Netmums.com AwardLearnToDance voted Netmums.com favourite adult class!

A local dance school has been voted among Britain’s best in a prestigious national competition.

The LearnToDance classes scooped one of the top awards in the Classes For You competition, run by Britain’s biggest parenting site Netmums.

The UK-wide competition was launched as a chance for people running adult classes to be recognized for their hard work serving and improving the local community.

Over 1.7 million members were eligible to vote in the competition.

Class organiser Antony Holeksa, 31, was delighted to be crowned a local favourite. The ex-competitive dancer set up the school with his wife Emma-Louise in 2006 and has seen it grow from a once-a-week hobby into a full-time dance school helping hundreds of students a week to LearnToDance.

Beaming, Antony said: “When we entered the competition we never dreamed we’d be one of the winners as there are over 300 different Classes For Adults listed in East Berkshire alone!  We just want to thank everyone that voted for us.  It really means a lot.

The LearnToDance classes will now be honoured with a coveted gold listing on the Netmums site, used by over a million people each week, along with a special ‘Netmums Favourite’ certificate to display in their class. LearnToDance also wins a badge for the www.learndance.co.uk and www.want-to-dance.co.uk websites and a place on the Netmums Award Winners pages.

Flooded Datchet

Roads in Datchet completely underwater

Anyone that’s been following the news these last couple of days, or even looked outside, will have seen the reports of flooding in and around the Thames.

This is to reassure our students that none of our halls are currently underwater!  However please note that if you normally come through Datchet to get to our classes (for instance if you come off at Jct 5 of the M4), Datchet is completely closed off to traffic due to excessive flooding.

We recommend coming via Slough Jct 6 (up and down the relief road for our Eton venues) or Jct 7 via Dorney.

You can keep abreast of the flood updates via the Environment Agency’s website.

All of our classes are running as normal but please do not put yourself in danger, we’re awesome but we’re not awesome enough to risk your life/property for!

We hope to see you soon and our thoughts go out to our students that are living with this on a daily basis at the moment, especially the couple that sent us this picture of their driveway:
