Looking to learn the Balmoral Blues, but don’t have the space, or want to practice at home? Check out our Sequence for Small Spaces series of videos.

Sequence dancing is where you repeat the same 16 or 32 bar routine throughout a song, dancing around the room, and in sync with everyone else.

Now that’s great when you have the space! What we’re going to show you today is how to practice the basic movements in your front room.

The Dance – Balmoral Blues

The Balmoral Blues is a nice laid-back dance, albeit with a couple of tricky movements within.

To convert this into the full routine you would dance the initial chassé and lock section down line of dance, and back to where you started.

The chassé to shadow hold is danced down the room, ending facing diagonal to the wall.

The walk and points move diagonally towards the wall for the first set, turning on the point to face diagonal centre for the second set of walks.

The turn at the end commences facing diagonal to wall.

The Dance – Sindy (Cindy) Swing

The Sindy Swing features a mixture of Charleston, Cha Cha, Waltz and Quickstep steps.

To convert this into the full routine you would do your lock steps and solo spin down the room. Obviously if near a corner you would still curve round to avoid crashing into the wall!

The box step and shoulder-to-shoulder would be done with the leader facing their nearest wall.

The chassés at the end would be danced down the room, but still turning around your partner. You would still end up side-by-side ready to start again after opening out.

The Dance – Tango Serida

The Tango Serida features a mixture of standard Tango steps, as well as some extra moves thrown in.

To convert this into the full routine you don’t need to change anything from the first half.

The first change would be as you start the second half of the routine. You would dance the spins down line of dance and end in promenade looking down the room.

The chassés at the end, after the Contra Check, would also be danced back and forward on the diagonal – with no rotation.

Now that’s great when you have the space! What we’re going to show you today is how to practice the basic movements in your front room.

The Dance – Sally Ann Cha Cha

The Sally Ann Cha Cha is composed entirely of the Latin American dance’s steps (as opposed to some other sequence dances that bear little resemblance to their namesakes – I’m looking at you Mayfair Quickstep!)

To convert this into the full routine you would dance down line of dance when doing the three Cha-cha-chas. You could still dance them as the chassé, lock, chassé combo, or as per the script with three lock steps side-by-side.

The follow my leader is danced on the diagonal but otherwise that, and the New Yorks, are danced as per the video.

We dance the weave down the room, and the cross basics facing line of dance.

You will then dance the turn down line of dance, turning to face your partner, with the leader ended facing their nearest wall.

The Music

For this Sequence for Small Spaces lesson we have used More Than You Know by the Chalalatas:

Now that’s great when you have the space! What we’re going to show you today is how to practice the basic movements in your front room.

The Dance – Saunter Together

The Saunter Together is based loosely on Foxtrot, although you won’t really recognise many steps!

To convert this into the full routine you would dance down line of dance first of all (rather than the diagonal), the repeat of the walking section takes you back to where you started. The turn to promenade would then be with you both looking down line of dance.

The promenade into the whisks would see the leader with their back to the wall having moved down line of dance. After the untwist the leader would now be facing the wall.

The chassé would be straight along line of dance and the turn to shadow hold would see us both looking down line of dance. After the turn around the leader is facing line of dance, the follower backing, and we start our Saunter Together again.

The Music

For our Saunter Together lesson we have used Jaguar Jive by the Water Mirrors:

although our favourite track for dancing a Saunter Together is My Baby Just Cares For Me by Nina Simone:

The Dance – Bossa Nova 66

Bossa Nova is another Brazilian dance with similarities to the Samba. The Bossa Nova 66 sequence dance also features a few Samba steps which should be familiar too.

The routine comprises a left foot box/reverse basic; opening up away from your partner, and back in again around on the spot; whisks, promenade and counter promenade bota fogos and finally an underarm spin for the follower.

To convert this into the full routine you would only need to do the open outs down the room, rather than around on the spot.

The Music

We’ve used two tracks for this Bossa Nova 66 lesson. The first is How About That! by the Chalalatas

and then our faster piece (a Samba) is Summer Lilac by Bonsaye

The Dance – Catherine Waltz

The Catherine Waltz features almost entirely bronze and silver level Waltz steps. The hardest move is the Closed Telemark due to its heel turn.

We’ve had a little bit of trouble with heel pulls and turns in this temporary studio, our shoes keeping sticking to the floor, but we’re doing our best!

The routine is made up of under-turned reverse turns, a forward passing change, some under-turned natural spin turns (very under-turned!), a whisk, wing and a closed telemark finished up with a move similar to a shoulder to shoulder.

To convert this into the full routine you would only need to finish the spin turns facing line of dance.

The Music

In our Catherine Waltz online lesson we have used Waltz For Little Italy by Bireli Snow

The Dance – Mambo Magic

The Mambo is another Cuban dance that is normally danced on the 2nd beat. However for sequence dances we always start on the 1st beat to make it easier.

The routine does feature a few elements of basic Mambo, but there are also a few trickier ’embellishments’ thrown in.

To convert this into the full routine you would only need to do all the movements, down the room, only curving when necessary to navigate the corners.

The Music

For our Mambo Magic video we taught the routine with a slower piece of music initially, May I Have This One by the Chalalatas:

Later in the video we do try it to a faster piece of music, Estelle by Dylan Joseph:

Now that’s great when you have the space! What we’re going to show you today is how to practice the basic movements in your front room.

The Dance – Argentine Stroll

Argentine Stroll is based loosely on Argentine Tango, but you wouldn’t want to dance it at your local Milonga!

We feel it’s one of, if not THE, hardest sequence dance we’ve come across. To make it easier to learn, we’re going to break it down into easy to master chunks. We’ll then bring it together to the full routine throughout the lesson.

We’ve made some adjustments to keep the routine compact so that you can practice the dance at home.

To convert this into the full routine you would do the initial basic and check straight down the room, the spins and lunges would be going back down the room again. The ronde would end with the leader facing their nearest wall and the grapevine section would be danced down the room. The Natural Pivot Turn then would do a complete 360 straight back to the beginning.

The Music

The Argentine Stroll is normally danced to Welcome To Burlesque by Cher

For this video we have used In A Gyroscope by T. Morri

Rumba One includes quite a few recognisable Rumba steps, including moves such as Fencing and Cuban Rocks.

We’re going to break it down into easy to master chunks, and then bring it together to the full routine throughout the lesson.

To convert this Rumba One into the full version you would curve the forward walks after the Cuban Rocks back to face the same wall you started on. After the Cucaracha you would chasse down the room as you take your partner into shadow hold before taking 6 Rumba Walks down the room.
