Learn Samba

The Samba is the Brazilian carnival dance. Whilst you are normally looking to dance through the streets, we’ll be showing you how to keep it compact.

We’ll start you off with the basic whisks and introduce underarm turns to the right and left.

Then we’re going to try the Argentine Crosses and Stationary Samba Walks, bringing in an underarm turn at the end.

Finally we’re going to look at the Maypoles, rotating in both directions. We’ll also try a direct change from one rotation to the other.

Don’t forget you can always pause and rewind to work on any steps and moves you struggle with.

Learn Merengue

The Merengue comes from the Dominican Republic but also shares similarities with other dance styles, such as Calypso.

We’ll start you off with the basic march, and add in a Reverse Top.

Then we’re going to bring in a Wrap and Walkaround, before introducing a Change of Sides for our partner.

Finally we’re going to add in the Rolling Off The Arm to tie all the moves together.

Don’t forget you can always pause and rewind to work on any steps and moves you struggle with.

American Smooth refers to the American style of dancing the Ballroom dances. This tends to favour more of an exhibition style of dance. Partners often release out of hold and can often let go entirely.

We won’t be letting go in this particular routine, more using some American Smooth movements to keep our routine more compact.

The Dance – Foxtrot American Smooth

The Foxtrot is a swing dance and is synonymous with the American Smooth. Even the basics can cover a lot of ground so we’ve worked on introducing moves that you can practice in a confined space.

We’re going to have a mixture between traditional Foxtrot steps, and a few basic American Smooth steps.

We start with a Feather Step and a Hover Telemark to keep things compact.

Then we introduce the Hover Cross from (a Silver-level step) and our first American Smooth step a Left Foot Box Turn (essentially the reverse turn from the Waltz).

Finally we’ll put in a grapevine.

This sequence could be included in your regular Foxtrot at a corner for example.

American Smooth refers to the American style of dancing the Ballroom dances. This tends to favour more of an exhibition style of dance. Partners often release out of hold and can often let go entirely.

The Dance – Viennese Waltz American Smooth

The Viennese Waltz is traditionally a rotational dance that moves around the outside of the floor.

Adding in elements of American Smooth though allows you to introduce some flair into the dance, and can often act as a breather too.

Just make sure you’re near the middle, or a corner, so that you aren’t hanging around when other dancers are coming hurtling towards you!

Our intention is to ease you in with a simplified (and more compact) version of the Reverse Turn, before trying an Open Break and an Underarm Turn to the Right. We’ll then be looking at the Explosion with a Fan Ending before adding in some Change of Places.

Learn Rumba

The Rumba is a Cuban dance and shares similarities with Cha Cha Cha, Mambo and Salsa.

It’s danced on the second beat of the music and we’ll discuss how to help you to start, using a weight transfer.

We’ll start you off with the basics, and add in a Natural Opening Out Movement. We then put in a cross between an underarm turn and an Alemana.

Finally we take it up a notch with a variation on the Sliding Doors, which we’ll finish with an arm wrap.

Don’t forget you can always pause and rewind to work on any steps and moves you struggle with.

Learn Argentine Tango

We teach Argentine Tango the same as we would teach any of our Ballroom dances. There are normally some differences in hold and posture but we won’t be covering them in this video

We haven’t covered the most basic of movements, but have rather given you a selection of steps that hopefully will make you feel like you are really ‘dancing’ the Argentine Tango.

You’ll get to learn Argentine Tango steps such as the Forward Ochos, a Left Giro (pronounced Hero) variation, and The Fan (like a Promenade Rondé).

Learn the Salsa

There are a number of variants of Salsa, including LA/Cross-Body Style (aka Salsa on 1); New York Style (aka Salsa on 2, very similar to Mambo); Cuban Style (a more rotational version of the dance).

We tend to teach mainly the Cross-Body Style but we’re always happy to throw in elements from the other styles if we feel they’ll fit.

This Learn Salsa video will feature a selection of basic steps before we ramp up with the Cuban Style Enchufla. We’ve got the Salsa Basic, a Natural Top, Cross-Body Lead, Enchufla, Cross-Body Pass and a man’s spin to right during the Enchufla!

Learn The Quickstep

Quickstep is one of our ballroom dances, although the initial basics are quite slow in comparison.

Our intention is to ease you in with a variation on the basic Quickstep steps: the Quarter Turn to the Right, and then the forgotten Quarter Turn to the Left; before adding in a Rondé for the leader and a Wing for the follower. We’ll have a Cross Chassé to Promenade Position followed by a Link, Progressive Chassé to Right, a Lock (turned), another Chassé and then an underturned Running Finish

The Dance – Tango American Smooth

Many people view the Tango as an agressive, staccato dance, featuring sharp head turns and quick changes of direction.

The American Smooth Tango takes elements of the Tango and adds in a more free-flowing feel.

Our intention is to ease you in with two simple American Smooth Tango steps: the eight count basic and the basic corte. Upon mastering this we will then introduce you to the more advanced cobra fans (which will take a bit more practice)!

You can also introduce the cobra fans into your regular Tango, assuming you have the space and time around you. The leader would just need to be preparing to step back with their left foot to initiate the movement.
