With our Under 8’s Rainbow class we normally start with a gentle warm-up, followed by a selection of party dances and then whatever dances we are currently working on – adapted for younger kids.

The aim is to have a few fun elements that teach basic techniques.

The Dances – Ballroom Party Dances

In this class we’ll be teaching you how to do a selection of some of our Ballroom Party Dances.

We’ll be teaching you the basic steps of:

• The Farmer’s Wife
• Baby Bus Stop (a simplified version of the Saturday Night Fever line dance)
• Heel-Toe Polka; and
• The Elephant Walk.

As well as being a fun way to start our classes they also help our kids to work on identifying left and right, and pick up some of the basic steps of other dances.

The Dance – Social Foxtrot

For this lesson Antony & Imogen show you some basic Social Foxtrot steps adapted for kids.

The Social Foxtrot is a nice and simple dance and you can adapt it for most spaces.

We start off with the Basic. This move involves two slow walks before a quick side close, with partners mirroring each other.

Next you will learn the promenade, which is the basic walks danced together with your partner, down the room.

Finally we’ll add in a solo spin which should still feature the same number of steps as the basic, but we don’t mind if it takes a few more to get round!

The Dance – Rumba

For this lesson Antony & Imogen show you some basic Rumba steps adapted for kids.

You dance Rumba on the second beat of the music. Generally you will hold the first beat once you start dancing, but we’ll have a small side step to start on the one.

We start off with an Alternative Basic. This move involves two weight changes on the spot, before a side step with a hold.

The next step we’ll look at is the New Yorks, but danced as a solo movement.

Finally we’ll add in some solo Spot Turns.

The Basic Rumba For Kids Music

The Dance – Charleston

For this lesson Antony & Imogen show you some basic Charleston steps adapted for kids.

The Charleston is a fun and energetic dance that originally developed in the 1920s. We’re going to show you a few solo steps that the kids can practice on their own (although parents you’re welcome to join in).

We start off with some twists, complete with optional “jazz hands”. Then we’ll have some Peckin’ (complete with Immi’s interpretation of a chicken); before looking at our Charleston Basic.

We’re making a change to our kid’s videos. Rather than a whole class we’re going to release individual videos of the different dances. We’ll also do a couple of quick videos of the warm-up ‘party’ dances and then you’ll be able to create your own class!

The Dance – Waltz

For this lesson Antony & Imogen show you some basic Waltz steps adapted for kids.

For the kid’s we’ll start them with what we call a hesitation change, which is just getting used to stepping forward with the right foot, and back with the left foot in time with the music.

We also introduce a bit of what we call Rise and Fall.

Then we adjust this move slightly and turn it into the right foot box. The main difference is that rather than staying on the spot, we do a side step on the second beat of each bar.

Finally we introduce a little bit of turn around on the spot.

Our Kid’s Class Merengue Lesson

In today’s kids class Imogen is going to show us her warm up.

We’ll then dance our Heel-Toe Polka (first shown back in our Kid’s Waltz class); followed by the Farmer’s Wife (first shown back in our first Kid’s class, Samba).

Finally Antony and Immi will take you through some basic Merengue with our march, a separation and turns for leader and follower.

With the Merengue our basic movement is a marching action, however rather than lifting the knees we aim to ‘push’ into the floor. We often describe this as imagining you are squashing grapes between your toes.

We tend to recommend parents act as the leader but feel free to do whatever works for you.

Finally Antony and Immi will take you through some basic Salsa, both solo and with a partner.

The basic steps for the Salsa are a Cucaracha (a rock to the side and close) and our ‘Mambo’ (which is a rock forward, close, rock back, close).

Initially Antony and Imogen will show these steps as Solo, standing side-by-side. Then we will try it with a partner, where you mirror their movements.

We tend to recommend parents act as the leader but feel free to do whatever works for you.

The aim is to have a few fun elements that teach basic techniques, before we cover a couple of simple steps of this video’s dance.

Our Kid’s Class Tango Lesson

First of all Imogen is going to show us a warm up, but this time she’s making Antony take part!

We’ll then try our Hand Jive again (we taught this last week) before we try a variation on a dance called The Elephant Walk.

For this version of The Elephant Walk we’re going to begin by pointing our right foot out to the side, and then back in, out and in. You repeat with the left foot. Point back and in, back and in with the right foot; and then forward and in, forward and in with the left foot. We slap our right knee twice, left knee twice. Kick across with the right, across with the left. Jump and then Clap.

Finally Antony will take you through some Kid’s Tango with some help from Imogen.

Our Kid’s Class Jive Lesson

In today’s kid’s class Imogen is going to show us her own warm up.

We’ll revisit our Farmer’s Wife again (we taught this a few weeks ago) before we show you the Hand Jive.

For the Hand Jive we’re going to start seated (it can be ‘danced’ standing). We’ll have our palms out in front of us and start with two passes of the hands above and below, two fist bumps with both hands, hitch-hikes over the shoulders and then clapping thighs and clapping hands. If you get excited you could always do the ‘Grease’ shuffle forward and the rodeo back – or just leave Antony to it!

Finally Antony will take you through some fun Jive.

In today’s kid’s class Imogen is going to show us her own warm up.

We’ll then try our Heel-Toe Polka again (we taught this last week) before we show you the Baby Bus Stop (a simplified version of the Saturday Night Fever line dance).

For the Baby Bus Stop they’re going to walk back three steps with their right foot and tap, three walks forward and tap. A side-close-side to the right and a spin back to the left. Point forward with the right heel, back right toe, forward right heel. Jump and Clap.

Finally Antony will take you through some basic Cha Cha Cha.

As always feel free to add in a Hokey Cokey if you like!
